Barack Obama: The Game Changer by Kendra - October 2017 Scholarship Essay

What a wonderful time to be alive on November 4, 2008 when Barack Obama won the U.S. presidential election. With joy in my heart, I witnessed along with other African Americans the first inauguration of an African American president. We finally got to see a qualified man become president regardless of his racial heritage.

Thanks to this election, I am more involved in politics, and stand firm when I say Barack Obama is one of the greatest presidents in history. Yes, he has made mistakes during his terms but even after completing his presidency, he is still involved with important social causes in our country.
One of many reasons why I fell in love with Obama is because he supports the best interests of our nation as whole. He especially cares about what is best for the middle class. He wanted to strengthen the middle class by extending tax breaks and providing a better health care system for those who did not have hope and needed to be healed. To me, this demonstrated his compassion and how he felt that everyone deserves a better life.

As a feminist, I want to work on making inequality go away, and lead the way for other women to have the same rights as men. Obama was for women’s rights. He nominated two women to the Supreme Court, which included the first Latina in American history. Furthermore, he has secured grant money for female business owners to help them to start their own businesses.

As a Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2009, he achieved one of the greatest accomplishments any person can hope to achieve in their lifetime. Not only is he for peace, but he successfully put an end to war in Iraq. He made an effort to strengthen U.S. international diplomacy.

Making it a top priority during his administration, Obama has always been an advocate for equal education for people of color. He increased federal funding for the Department of Education and doubled the amount of grant money available to students who seek a higher education.

His magnanimous personality, and what he did while he was in office, lets me know our conversation at dinner would be great, interesting, and fun. He is funny, listens to the same music as I do, jokes about drinking beer, and has even admitted to watching the Kardashians. There is something about him that makes him relatable and real. He never lost sight of the fact that he is human, just like everyone else, yet his dedication to social causes, leadership and effecting change makes him one of the most inspiring leaders of modern times in the world today.
