Sink or Swim by Kendall - June 2024 Scholarship Essay

I welcome the nerves as I approach the block, but I can't stop yawning. Calm down, Kendall… it'll be fine. Just swim. And breathe. That’s it.

It’s 20 laps today. I’m swimming the 500-yard freestyle event. None of my teammates volunteer for this event… am I crazy to WANT to do this?

One whistle, step onto the block, get in the zone. Deep breaths. Inhale. Exhale. Repeat. Ready.

“Swimmers take your marks”. The buzzer sounds. My reflexes take over as I leave the block. I feel solid and know it’s a great start. The first turn comes quickly. Only 19 laps to go. Find your rhythm and pace yourself, Kendall. Don’t second guess it.”

Less than 6 minutes later, it’s over. I did it! I have secured my spot at CIF! My commitment, diligence, drive and devotion have paid off. I have literally “gone the extra mile”.

The grit and determination I have acquired through athletics has been the key to my academic success. Not only have I learned what it takes to succeed, I have learned that having a physical outlet is what’s needed to balance my physical and mental health.

This informal education has been the backbone for success. Starting my freshman year in my room, by myself, turned my already anxious life into a dark world. I become less confident with every zoom class I attended. My already tiny friend circle became non-existent. Then I found the water.
Swimming catapulted me out of my funk. My confidence soared. I was ready to learn. And now I am graduating Magna Cum Laude and I’m so proud of the person I have become. Thank you swimming!
