Buffonery 101: Why Society Loves Ignorance by Kendall - August 2017 Scholarship Essay

There are many problems wrong with our world. Climate change, Poverty, Women's Rights, Instituional Racism, Police Brutality, Animal Cruelty, Gentrification, Air Pollution, Water Pollution, Classism, Student Debt, Sexual Assult, Endangered Species, Health Insurance, Mental Illness, & Gun Control. These issues are important but are overwhelming. Many people will say they are not activists or politicians to escape worrying about these issues. And there is some truth to that. Worrying about these issues 24/7 will drive you insane. To the contrary, it shouldn't mean to dismiss these issues wholeheartedly. Other professions such as comedians, use real world issues and apply humorous context around them to make their material less depressing.
Another topic I would want to discuss is our obsession with making ignorant people famous. One of the latest cases of this act was Danielle Bregoli, A.K.A. the "Cash Me Outside" girl. This 14-year-old's claim to fame was fighting, disrespecting her mother, and saying the infamous phrase "Cash me outside, how bout dah?" Now all of a sudden she is an internet sensation and has earned a good living off her acts. In Buffonery 101, I would like my students to dive into the psychological aspects of ignorance, have discussions on various that are prevalent within our society, and have speakers further education on these concepts.
