Unforeseen Challanges by Kelsie - August 2022 Scholarship Essay
Each academic year allows new goals and new challenges to arise. This previous spring semester brought on extreme and unique challenges. My fiancé was diagnosed with brain cancer right before finals week. Our hospital in the town with our university was not equipped to handle emergency brain surgery and his intensive treatment. They transported him to a bigger hospital in the neighboring state. I had to pack our apartment up, leave my job and move to support him during his treatment. Now almost every aspect of our life has been uprooted and changed, except my education. Due to the pandemic, many courses are available online through my university. I can continue taking courses this fall from a different area while he continues his treatment. I am looking forward to gaining more knowledge from my courses and balancing my academics with our personal challenges.
Due to the unfortunate events that led up to my finals this previous semester, I did not have the time or focus to study and prepare for my finals. I received lower grades on my final exams and in the courses which lowered my GPA. As a Human Nutrition and Food major, my admission into master’s programs and internships relies on my GPA for my undergraduate. I am hoping that I can use this semester to bring my GPA back up by getting high letter grades. I can achieve this by setting time aside each day to study the material discussed in lecture. To revise and receive good grades on assignments, I will work ahead of time. This will give me time to meet with the professor or teacher’s assistants if I have questions to ensure that I know the material. Overall, I would love to improve my GPA this academic year by focusing on truly understanding the material in the courses.
