Keep Moving Forward by Kelsie - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

I’m sure when most people went to write this essay that they were thinking about lessons from their high school teachers. I could have easily picked a million lessons from high school but that’s too easy. I’ve really only had one lesson that has stuck with me for a while now and it was from a college professor.
I specifically remember the day and why he was teaching us this lesson. He began by telling us about how his father in law had passed away recently. His oldest son, who is about 17, was really close to his grandpa and was deeply sadden by his passing. About 3 weeks later, his son went to go to his friend’s house and when he knocked his little sister answered the door and said he was busy. So my professor’s son headed home. As he was driving he passed an ambulance and it was headed in the direction of his friend’s house. He hurried and turned around and headed back to his friend’s house. Come to find out, his friend had shot himself. If only he would have been able to get in the house he could have maybe stopped him.
Now you are probably thinking how this is a lesson. Well, my professor when on to say that his son kind of went into a depression after losing his grandpa and best friend. So he sat down with his son and told him that even though he was going through a rough time right now, he shouldn’t dwell on it. It was only going to make him sadder and more depressed. His words of advice were to keep moving forward. Even in hard times whether it’s the passing of a loved one or even trying to make it through school, keep moving forward.
