The Benefits of Leadership Qualities and College by Kelsey - March 2015 Scholarship Essay

The term “success” simply means to accomplish one’s goals but it is important to remember that not everyone will have the same goals in college or in life. I do believe that if success is measured in an individual getting good grades, obtaining a degree and getting a good job after college, then leadership qualities can be very beneficial in being successful.

College is a time full of challenges and various experiences for everyone. Someone who possesses leadership qualities will often rise to the challenges and remain successful during their collegiate career where others may fail. When someone enters college, they are discovering how responsible they are going to have to be for themselves. Teachers in college do not beg you to attend class or complete your work. It is entirely up to you as an individual to decide how much, if any, success you wish to have.

One of the key leadership qualities I feel someone will need is management and planning. With various courses being taken and the differences in the amount of work required for each, being able to manage your time and plan things ahead to ensure you are completing assignments when due is a must. Professors in college do not care if you are sick or forgot to get your work done. It is due when it is due and those who are able to manage their time appropriately and plan ahead will find themselves more successful than those who do not.

The individual who is motivated to succeed and has goals with strategies to achieve those goals will often be more successful in college than those who are not. Someone who is motivated will often work harder to get what he or she wants and stop at nothing to achieve it. When you set a goal and develop the strategy needed to achieve this goal, this in itself is the motivation needed to achieve it. Once a goal is achieved, you feel more successful and will often find you setting more difficult goals and planning the strategies to achieve them. This is a quality that is beneficial in life as well as college.

In closing, I do not think that possessing leadership qualities are not necessary to be successful in college but I do believe that an individual who does have them will be far more successful and work harder than someone who does not. It is important to remember that “being successful,” means different things to different people. It just depends on how you define it.
