Teaching with Heart by Kelsey - January 2015 Scholarship Essay

As a student, I have learned that every teacher has a different way of teaching. They all have different personalities, morals, or motives. I understand this, and I do not expect them to all be the same. Even though they cannot all be the perfect teacher, the piece of advice that I would like to give to them is something that I hope they can take to heart.

The advice I would give to teachers is to treat each student that you have the privilege to teach like one of your own and do it with your whole heart. Do not just spit information out and expect them all to grasp the concept immediately and get to know the students. Each child is different in their own way including myself, so take the time to figure out the most effective way to teach them something just as you would with your own child. The classroom is an important place in development, and actually caring for students will increase their level of comfort and trust. This comfort and trust would lead to an easier learning process for me. I have been fortunate enough to have teachers that loved me like their own, but not all teachers I have had are as kind.

By taking this advice, I think it would help me learn, and I think it would also help other students. I really did not know what would be a good answer to this question until I gave myself a few days to think about it. I played softball my entire life, and I now coach. A coach is a teacher, and with that being said, I have learned more from the coaches in my life that have treated me like their own child, not just another kid on a roster. I now put this to use in my own coaching style. Teachers are very special people with a very important job, and I think that they should teach with their whole heart. If more teachers would take this advice, I think it would do wonders.
