The Beauty of Art by Kelsey - November 2021 Scholarship Essay
The Beauty of Art
In this scholarship prompt, I was asked the following question: What class do I think deserved more emphasis in school, and why? To put it simply, I believe art/theater classes are underrated in school and almost looked over. I feel these classes need more emphasis in school for multiple reasons. They are safe places for students to be creative and put their creativity into action, either in play writing, sculpting, painting, drawing, or much more. The theater and art teachers are also some of the kindest, most accepting teachers I’ve ever met. Art also helps with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness. Theater brings play, humor, and laughter to learning; this improves motivation and reduces stress. The social interaction and risk taking in drama develop trust in self, others, and the process.
I know the prompt only asked for one class, but these two link together very well, and, at least in my school, are very underappreciated and overlooked. So as I said above, art and theater inspire creativity. We see creativity in everyday life, everywhere we go, whether it be in room design, architecture, people’s gardens, or paintings on walls. The teachers are also super helpful and kind and they make sure that you feel safe and loved. This is just a short version of why I believe that these two classes need more emphasis in school.
