Bigger and Better by Kelsey - October 2018 Scholarship Essay

Every person on the planet has a unique way of thinking. Even though there may be individuals with similar mindsets or opinions, that person will not strategize and solve problems exactly like you do. Therefore, when you ask a person a question, similar to this essay question, the results will vary wildly. When applying for colleges, scholarships, or even a job, the goal is to stick out over the others. When applying, you want to "think outside the box" to find a way to make yourself known. Thinking outside of the box means to set aside your usual thinking and think beyond what you think you're capable of.
Recently I have found my secret love for computer science. In my freshman year of high school my algebra one teacher recommended me for his into to computer science class. My junior year I decided I wanted to try something new and try the class. Computer science involves learning a new language that the computer will understand. Through out the year, I found myself struggling with certain projects that required me to think outside of the box. This had me not only think about what I already know, but think about how I can use that knowledge to create a bigger concept.
AP (advanced placement) classes also require you to think outside the box. These classes are designed to give you simple and basic knowledge and then ask you critical thinking questions. Currently, I am taking two AP classes; AP Biology and AP Computer Science (yes, I enjoyed the class that much). My AP biology teacher requires her students to read chapters from the textbook to understand the current chapter. Class time is dedicated to activities and labs where we have to use what we taught ourselves. The activities require us to interact and prove our knowledge by answering questions and completing critical thinking labs.
These two examples above show that thinking outside of the box means that you have to use your knowledge to create a bigger and better concept. This essay asks me to try and use my knowledge about myself and the world around me to come up with an answer to stick myself out from the crowd (to think outside of the box). To not only answer the question, but in a way that's different and more meaningful than the other submissions.
