The Truth About High School by Kelsey - April 2016 Scholarship Essay
One thing that I would really like for younger students to understand is that life goes by fast. Middle school will pass you by within the blink of an eye and high school will end within in one breath. Use your four years wisely because a lot of people wish that they could take back those four years and start over again. I never knew how important college would be as soon as I became a junior. I never knew that volunteering in programs and sports would give me a better opportunity to earn a scholarship. Over time, you’ll begin to realize how important these things are to you and if you don’t realize it soon enough, you will be missing out on a lot of opportunities.
When you get into high school, you come with nobody. Just like being born, you are born by yourself. Friends do not really matter because they come and go. You see, friends are like ropes. There is only so much you can do before you begin to realize that that rope is burning you. You can hold on to the rope for so long but eventually you’ll slip and you’ll detach from the rope. You’re fortunate if you have friends that have been there for you from the start. However, some friends tend to be bad influences so be careful who you become friends with because some will get you in trouble and others will completely change you.
Another thing to remember is to always be YOURSELF. Feel comfortable in your own skin and with your own style. Once you try to fit in and be like everyone else, you’re no longer original. No one else can be you, but you. Always try to stand out but always remember who you are and why you chose to be so. Do not let others bring you down and always remember to keep your head up. If you’re a girl, boys do NOT matter. All of my friends had boyfriends and I’ve seen every single one of them to the point of no longer wanting to live all because of some boy that broke their heart. I’ve seen so many of my friends go through so many things and I just want to remind you to be a good friend no matter how many people treat you like you’re not worth a dime. Things happen for a reason and a lot of things can change you forever. High school isn’t about who is popular and who isn’t. TRUST ME, it’s NOTHING like the movies you see on television.
When you’re in class, IT IS okay to ask questions. It is okay to be curious, it is PERFECTLY fine to want more homework or to want to do more projects. Believe me, homework makes everything better and paying attention makes everything more understanding and easier. The more you do, the more you learn and education is something that no one can ever take from you. Don’t be the kid that is highly disruptive. Don’t be that one kid that constantly texts or watches inappropriate YouTube videos in class while the teacher is showing a documentary and wants you to take notes. No matter what the teacher does, NEVER bite the hand that feeds you. If you do get that one negative teacher, there are plenty of ways to work around them. Talk to someone that you truly trust if you are having a problem in class. Never give up just because someone treats you wrong. You will go through life with people treating you wrong and that is okay because when you get rid of them, they will always be under or behind you.
Its fine to make friends, its fine to be in a relationship and its fine to change yourself but never change yourself for someone else. Love your family, love yourself, get interested in your hobbies and discover yourself. Remember, no one else can be you and it’s up to you to make the decision on whether or not success matters to you. The truth about high school remains a mystery but always learn for yourself and do the right things. I promise you, you can make a difference in this world when you actually TRY.
