Companionship by Kelly - February 2015 Scholarship Essay

The book that I have chosen is one of the many pieces of literature imposed upon students within the English class curricula. The most memorable and noteworthy publishings, I believe, are the ones that manage to deeply cultivate the reader into the story. The authors of these stories exhibit the extraordinary when making companions out of two breeds of adventurers - one the reader and the other an individual or group of characters within the scribed journey.

When I plummeted into the rich story of The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, I ventured into a displaced world contrasting greatly from the normalcy of my sheltered reality. I plummeted into the Afghan political and social atmosphere touching the fictitious boyhoods of Amir and Hassan. Exemplifying an archetypal relationship torn by external forces, this novel effectively portrays the extents of loyalty, betrayal, love, and maturity consistent within all friendships. As I passively accompanied the life of the protagonist, Amir, and read the ensuing aftermath of mistakes and tragedy upon a marred friendship and country, Amir acquired lessons from experience while I acquired perspective from relatability. The relatability of a universal relationship within a unique and prevalent setting ultimately captivated my role as the reader to invest my sentiments within this author’s collection of words.

From my appreciation and understanding of the realistic undertone this story offered, I believe that high school students would gain and foster a sense personal comprehension of a setting so pertinent today. I along with my high school peers who also read this novel shared mutual reactions toward this novel as it captivated our hearts and understanding of relevant a time. I will always remember the friendship that heightened the boundaries of loyalty and maturity.
