My Time at the Hospital by Kelly - April 2022 Scholarship Essay
When I was a freshman in high school, I volunteered at Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia. I worked in the volunteer department on the lower floor. There, I answered phone calls, made regular deliveries of food and entertainment to the patients, and even offered them my company if they wanted to talk. Thankfully, it was easy to work because that was the first time I did anything besides going to school. I was too young to have a job, so I considered this entry-level work.
I also enjoyed the company of my coworkers. They consisted of two older men and one older woman. They were very welcoming much to my surprise. Because I have dealt with verbal abuse from my family during my developmental years, I internalized their harsh words and expected the same treatment from everyone else. During our spare time, we talked about our interests and enjoyed each other’s company. It was the first time anyone spoke to me with such patience and kindness and treated me like an equal.
Although the work was simple, I was glad I chose to volunteer. I was able to experience kindness and was given a chance to see what it might be like to work with people. I learned that I am worthy of people’s time and that I am a capable and hardworking person. It gave me a chance to see what it is like to work in a hospital setting. It was uneasy sometimes to come into a patient’s room and see them suffering. It gives a sense of helplessness to see the mortality of humans. Although I enjoyed providing service to people in need, I realized that I am not able to handle it. The experience helped me realize how much work goes into caring for a patient. Although STEM fields, and especially hospital work, are not for me, I appreciate the work and care the doctors and nurses provide.
