A Pursuit for Happiness in the World of Careers by Keisha - February 2019 Scholarship Essay
When do you realize what your dream job is? Is it when your Biology teacher instructs you about the way your immune system battles a foreign bacteria that’s entered your body? Or is it when you get a five on your English AP exam that you begin to think that you should major in English and become a college professor? Possibly. Writing this essay helped me find out that I want to become a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner.
In the past four years I’ve been asked, “What do you want to study when you grow up?” I’ve always answered with a simple yet complex word; medicine. But I’ll be honest, when I was asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I always changed my answer. Figuring out what I want to be has possibly been one of the hardest ideas I’ve had to struggle with, to this day. The pressure of deciding your future career is hard, considering that you have to take recommended classes in high school and be ready to apply to colleges and universities that best fit your career. One thing was for sure, I wanted to study medicine. It’s a stretch to believe that I, myself, will help change the world with my medical abilities, but there isn’t anything wrong with that. As cheesy as it might be, one can really change the world, or at least change someone’s world for the better.
Medicine, it’s a tough study. I juggled back-and-forth between being a Midwife, wait, a nurse, or maybe, could it be, a doctor? Every career I chose for the past 5 years has been in the health category, besides my phase of wanting to be an architect in my childhood years due to my father being a construction worker. Working in the medical field is no easy job, but it most definitely is easier when it’s your dream job that you want to pursue not only for your own benefit, but also for others. I realized everything falls into its place if it really is what you wish to pursue.
So what exactly is a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner? A WHNP is a well-educated and knowledgeable nurse practitioner who bases on the care of women of all ages. Not only do I want to help women with issues regarding solely their gender, but help them as they grow into someone different. Typically, I’d start helping a woman in her early teens, in which she could still be considered a child. A person is formed by their influence perceived from the world, and the people surrounding them. A young girl who has no one to look up to has a more difficulty when facing the world and growing on their own. I don’t want to be the person that young girls have to look up to, but I do want to be an option; someone they can intimately trust with confidentiality.
As a junior in high school, I still have a good amount of time to figure out my plans after graduating. I’ve taken, and plan to take, the required classes to head onto a four year university and pursue my career at a medical school. This is the plan; first you get accepted into your dream university, you graduate, then you go on and get your bachelor’s after four years, continue on to medical school, and so on. Seems easy, correct? Not to be a Debbie Downer, but pursuing your dream career will not be easy. There will be so many challenges along the way, and hopefully a lot of lessons learned for the best.
I plan on going straight to San Diego State University for my first four years and my bachelor’s. Next is medical school, and I don’t wish to go to Stanford, I will. It will require a profound amount of dedication and motivation, but everything is possible. Saying you can do it and knowing you will be able to accomplish it does change the odds, which will always be in your favor if you shape it that way.
All in all, my dream job is to change the world. Being a WHNP alone won't help me transform the world in a surmount of years in the field, let alone one day, I understand that. One day at work ten years from now I might be the one person who can offer the help to a young girl in need, and that will be the equivalence of changing the world. One thing for sure, it’s never too late to pursue your dream job.
