Those That Are Remembered by Kehmoni - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

Some people say you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Although, in my book, you can teach any dog of any age something new if you just take the time to support them and stay on them!

As a student, sometimes things can get hard. Especially, when you're taking classes that are challenging for you. During my senior year of high school, there were many times that I wanted to, or just thought about dropping a class when things started to get hard for me. That is until one of my teachers stepped in.

My senior year of high school, I took AP Statistics. AP Statistics was a completely different type of math all together, and I really struggled with it too. Which is saying a lot because, math has always been my strongest area. All through first semester, I had difficulty understanding the material we were being taught, consistently drifting between a C- and a D+. It was a huge confidence shaker for me. Luckily, I had a teacher who actually cared about me not only as hos student, but as a person too! He took the time to sit down with me, and helped me go over all of the areas that I was struggling with, and he was able to talk me through every step until I fully understood every problem. After that, he would always come over to my desk or ask me after class, if everything was okay and if I was understanding all of the material that he had taught that day in class. He would always reassure me every time that if I needed any help, that he would be there for me whenever he could. For the remainder of the semester I would go in to get help whenever I felt stuck on a problem. Every time I went in to get help, I would walk out not only feeling better about myself, but I also was able to gain more confidence in my work that I would complete. His help also motivated me to keep pushing to keep doing my best in the class regardless of how hard it got for me!At the end of first semester, I ended off with a 79% in the class. It wasn't at all what I wanted, but I knew that I was making progress, and that I had a teacher who cared and was with me every step of the way.

Second semester, I came in with more confidence than ever! My teacher continued to work with me, and I was able to actually understand all of the material that was being taught. It took a ton of hard work, but by the end of second semester, I ended up with a solid 88% in the class!! On the last day of class my teacher came up to me, and told me that he knew I could do it and how proud of me has was!

Ever since then, I've realized that no matter how hard a situation is, or might seem, that as long as I at least have that one person who's fighting with me, helping me, and encouraging me along the way, that I can do anything! I may not have been an old dog, but I did learn something new, and I sure an glad that I did too!
