Kindness by Keely - September 2014 Scholarship Essay

College is a tough and competitive situation for anyone who attempts to get an acceptance letter, let alone attend college. Through all this struggle and rushing around, people forget that everyone else has emotions and may need more help than them. Kindness is something that such a competitive atmosphere lacks, for the most part. It is one of those things that is so easily overlooked when it is left out, and something that is appreciated to no end when shown to someone who needs it. Kindness creates an area where people not only learn from the instructor, but from those surrounding them. The kindness one student shows to another can enhance the learning ability of that student; The kindness a professor shows their student can make the job of the professor run much more smoothly, as well as make it easier. When a student will show another how they understand something, even when the professor does a "not-so-good" job teaching that specific concept, it not only raises the test scores of the institution, putting it in higher standing, it also moves that subject field a little farther into understand what it is and how best to work with it.

Students, despite what many may think when they see the fight over college acceptance letters, are not cold hearted. The emotions that they feel are smothered by pressure and stress, building until the student falls apart. They feel that their families, the other students, and the college are forcing them to attempt as many course hours as they can. A simple act of kindness can relieve some of the stress, keeping their emotions from overflowing and making their situations that much more difficult.
