Healthy Transformations by Kaylyn - January 2016 Scholarship Essay
“No matter who you are, no matter what you did, no matter where you’ve come from, you can always change, become a better version of yourself” (Madonna). In a perfect world, my life would be just like I wanted it to be. But, as I found out along with those around me, life isn’t perfect. Actually, it’s far from it. However, no matter how imperfect one is, there is always room for positive change. That is why I chose to make the resolute decision of becoming healthy in body, mind, and soul for the year of 2016.
As a senior in high school, I’m about to take a huge step in my life. College is less than a year ahead of me and I have a lot of preparing to do, both physically and mentally. The transition from high school to college will definitely take some adjusting to. I will no longer be at home and will have to perform more errands than I am used to: buying groceries, doing laundry, making my own decisions, which church to attend, etc. I feel that it’s important to start preparing myself now for what I will soon face.
When the new year first came around the corner, I was having trouble deciding what my resolution should be. There were a few small things I wanted to change, but I wanted to challenge myself. How can I really change for the better? So, I decided to become healthier, not only physically but spiritually and emotionally. With this resolution, I knew that I would face multiple challenges each day and would need to make important decisions to stick to my plan.
I think that everyone has a fear -even if just a little- of gaining weight in college. I’m not extremely worried about it since I am happy with my current weight, but I feel that it’s important that I work to maintain my health. This includes managing my time well so that I can get enough sleep, riding a bike instead of driving everywhere, and picking nutritious food over junk food. If I learn these habits now, I can carry them with me even after my college career is through.
Faith has always been important to me. I have attended and been a counselor at multiple bible camps. However, faith is more than just actions. I’ve realized lately that, along with those actions, I need to stay on the right track that God has planned for me and not only do whatever I want. In the future, the growth in my faith will help me see the decisions I need to make.
Finally, I made the decision to become healthier emotionally in my relationships and social life. I have always been known as a shy and quiet girl. However, I think that if I can move out of my comfort zone and actually start conversations instead of waiting for others to initiate them, I will be more confident. Don’t get me wrong, I have an amazing group of close friends that I adore! But, once I go off to college I will have to make new friends. This is why I must be stronger than I think I can be and become more of a social person. This will benefit me in the classroom and in my personal life.
I know that my resolution will take a great deal of determination, but I feel that it is one that can be accomplished with hard work and dedication. All I need to do is keep in the right mindset. I am excited to start my career as a college student. Plus, I believe that my college experience will change me for the better by helping me grow healthy in body, mind, and soul.
