Purpose of Education by Kaylin - April 2015 Scholarship Essay
Whether in homeschool, public school, private school, or virtual school, students are in the process of acquiring new information to use in their future lives. The education that students are getting is very important to their past, present, and future. The purpose of education is to learn and gain knowledge from the subjects taught and to learn the process of learning.
From biology to photography, from physics to anthropology, from theatre arts to literature, all of these areas of study can further a student’s education into an area of work. The skills that students learn during the time in school will be used in the jobs or careers that they are working towards. Those studying biology can later become marine biologists. Those studying physics can later become biomedical engineers. Those studying literature can become literature professors. Whatever a student studies during their time in preschool to college, they will use in their future. In todays time, career workers are also expected to have degrees in their area of work. For example, a student pursuing a career in graphic arts will be expected to have at least a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Arts in most situations. The importance of having the foundational knowledge and skills that are taught from an education is greater now than ever.
The other purpose of education is to learn about the process of learning and to make mistakes and learn from them. In schools, students are required to take a numerous amount of classes that most likely will not pertain to some of the student’s future careers. When I was about seventh grade, I constantly questioned, “Why do I have to take Chinese? I know I am not planning on using this in my future, so why must I take it?” In the years coming shortly afterward, I learned that the point of taking classes such as Chinese would teach us more about how to study and learn in the way that is most effective to us. In short, I learned that I was a very visual learner; I had to repeat visual cues that would eventually be stored semantically in my memory. At one point in my education during middle school, I thought I should try out learning auditorily. After a few short weeks, I figured out that I was not learning effectively this way, and I switched back to studying by visual cues. Throughout a student’s education, mistakes have to be made and learning from those mistakes must happen. This in turn will help students grow toward a brighter future. Education’s purpose is not only to learn specific skills according to the job or career that any student is pursuing, but it is to learn about learning; each student must learn how to achieve the goals they have set by making mistakes and learning from them.
Students all over the world are currently learning skills and acquiring knowledge that they will use for their entire lifetime. No matter if they are homeschooled or in public school, each student is going through the school system to ensure that their future is bright. Education’s purpose is not only to learn and gain knowledge, but also to learn how to learn and make mistakes along the way.
