Communication, in my opinion, is one of the most essential soft skills that anyone can possess. Not only does it play a crucial role in education, but effective communication works to ensure that students are able to successfully engage with their teachers and peers inside of the classroom.

Upon stepping inside a traditional classroom, one will be greeted by a teacher, someone who has specialized knowledge in a certain subject. The teacher will go on to instruct and direct students, sharing concepts and ideas with their students. They will do this through a variety of ways, utilizing visual, verbal, and auditory stimuli. As a student, it can sometimes be difficult to fully grasp an entire lecture, despite a teacher’s best efforts. This is where effective communication comes in. When teachers and students communicate effectively, they can establish a healthy relationship, which enhances trust and respect. For instance, a student can ask for clarification or follow up questions as a teacher lectures. If they are confused about a concept, they can ask for an explanation. The ability to ask anything that comes to mind is empowering and helps foster an atmosphere where students feel comfortable expressing their doubts. This allows teachers to provide support and reassurance to their students.

Similarly, communication is a two way street. It is also the responsibility of the teacher to clearly articulate their ideas, expectations, and knowledge to their students. When a teacher is confident and can communicate clearly, students have an easier time understanding subjects that are often hard to understand. Teachers act almost as translators, simplifying difficult concepts into graspable chunks of knowledge that students can take in. Communication is a key component of this process, and lays the foundation for students to build knowledge on.

By perfecting communication skills within the classroom, students and teachers are adequately prepared to step into the real world where communication skills are used actively everyday. Starting early and being mindful of communication within the classroom will give students a leg-up for the rest of their life. Additionally, as students transition through the education system, communication will undoubtedly always be utilized. Possessing confidence in one’s ability to verbalize their thoughts is a key component that is necessary inside the classroom but also throughout one’s life.

In conclusion, communication is essential for a successful education, even more so in everyday life.
By honing one’s communication skills, students and teachers will foster growth and create a positive learning environment, enabling both teachers and students to approach any educational situation with confidence.
