A Clockwork of Literature by Kayleigh - July 2013 Scholarship Essay
Reading drives creativity in the world and inspires people to form different opinions. The best book I have read, fitting this drive is A Clockwork Orange. My english teacher began reading this book to my class in my senior year of high school. His main reason behind reading this masterpiece to us was to futher our reading comprehension skills. With all the russian slang and made up words in the text, what better way to learn. For a couple of weeks, we would read a few pages a day when we received the bad news. Someone's parents heard we were reading the book and complained to the school. The parents said the content was inappropriate for teenagers of our age. My teacher agreed, if we had watched the movie. However he never planned for us to watch the movie, only to read a classic while fine tuning our comprehension skill. So we stopped reading the book, however I was hooked. I went out and bought the book and told my teacher right away. He was stoked to see that I was interested in it! The further I got into the book, the more I was shocked to hear we werent supposed to read it! The main character, Alex, has such an interesting character dynamic. To follow the supposed bad guy throughout the book changes your veiw on good and evil. To me, the book explains the struggles of growing up in a world that may not accept you. It is an amazing story of a journey into adulthood, while it also holds the interests of many others. Just about everyone has something to take from the story, whether it be action, syfy, morals, or plain violence. It is a book I would suggest to anyone and everyone. A tale that will never get old and die or be to advanced for a person to handle.
