Breaking The Stigma Surrounding Pregnancy Decisions by Kaylee - December 2023 Scholarship Essay

My chosen major (Biology) is used in a variety of professions, one of them being an OBGYN. Medical providers in this field impact society by attempting to break the stigma surrounding pregnant women and their decisions. Creating a safe judgmental free space for women to carefully discuss and conclude their decisions is one of the most important tasks in this field.
I recently experienced a miscarriage which brought me to the final decision of biology. I was an 18 year old woman expecting a child. I had come to the conclusion that everything happens for a reason and that this child was a blessing. Yet, it ended too early. I dreaded getting medical care because I was scared of how they would treat me. I knew that most people would judge me for what happened and I desperately did not want to go through more than what I was already going through. However, I knew if I did not go to get medical care, there was a possibility that I would get worse. When I went to the OBGYN, the doctor who helped me was incredibly kind which came as a relieving surprise for me. She treated me like her equal and did not judge me for my young age. She intricately asked her questions needed for the exam in a compassionate way. This was a hard situation, but my doctor made me feel more at ease than how I thought I was going to feel. She made me feel incredibly safe overall, especially when the medical tests had to be administered. Her kindness helped me get through this terrible time in my life.
This is an example of how my chosen major benefits society. By creating a safe space in the medical room for patients to feel comfortable and not judged. In doing so, society will one day cease the judgment of pregnant women and their decisions. We are all human beings and we are all equal. This means that everyone needs to help one another receive the treatment they need and feel comfortable while doing so.
