How "Green" Inspired Me by Kaylee - November 2022 Scholarship Essay
British author, Mary Webb, stated that “Green is the fresh emblem of well-founded hopes.” Green is a color that one can see everywhere you look. However, to me it means tremendously more than just a color. Green is the color that comes to mind, when I think about the place that means the most to me. That very special place is Pisgah High School; the place where I became who I am.
“Green” has brought best friends into my life. The people I met at Pisgah High School have taught me what it truly means to put others before myself. Before I came to Pisgah, I told everyone that I did not want to play school sports any more. I did not want to be involved in any extracurricular activities. In fact, I was determined that I just wanted to finish my last two years of high school and go away to college. However, green challenged me to try new things and to become even more involved at school. Green is the color that I wore with pride to every Tuesday soccer match, with excitement to every Friday night football game, and with enthusiasm to every Saturday track meet! Being a part of something bigger than myself taught me more life lessons than just winning on my own ever could have taught me. While participating in school athletics, I learned to take risks. Without taking risks, I never would have known what could happen.
The color green reminds me of the days when I thought I would never get through the day, yet because a teacher pushed me, I continued to try. When I imagine the color green, I am reminded of the sweet memories of the last two years of high school. Having come from a place of so much pain and heartache, green stands for the school family that changed my whole perspective on life. Green inspired me to live life with hope again. When I think of green, I see the faces of teachers who checked on me every day after my sister passed away during my sophomore year. Those teachers constantly reminded me that it is okay to ask for help. These teachers are people whom I truly trust. I know that they are on my side every day. They taught me that my hardest days are often the days that bring the best rewards. I am forever grateful that green brought me these teachers who never let me give up on my dreams in life.
To me, green is a symbol of the life lessons I learned at Pisgah. Of course, school is meant to prepare you academically for the working world. However, Pisgah High School does not stop at academics, but aims to teach character, as well. Green has taught me what it means to have the courage to continue to work hard, even when the results are not what I wanted them to be at first. Green taught me to persevere and push to get the results I wanted, even when things were bad around me. Green has taught me about integrity and about doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. Green has also taught me about friendship, teamwork, putting others’ needs before mine and about working together to get the best results possible. Without Pisgah “green”, I would not be the person I am today.
To many people, “green” is just a pretty color. However, the color green will always mean so much more to me. Green will always be a symbol of the place that taught me how to appreciate life. I will always be thankful that Pisgah ‘green’ was brought into my life.
