The Early Bird Gets the Worm by kaylee - November 2019 Scholarship Essay

As an Eagle Scholar student, Morehead State University’s Upward Bound president, and as a student who is passionate about her academics, I find myself as a motivator to other students seeking to excel in education after graduation.

Before my knowledge in the college preparation field, I didn’t know how to do the basic things that are needed to apply for a college. My school did inform students, but not until their senior year, which is a disservice. It wasn’t until my grandmother had expressed the importance of applying early, that I started to think ahead. I recall her saying, “the early bird gets the worm”. This phrase stuck inside my head through out the whole process, so that I too, could get the worm. After my realization of early college preparation, I had to be the voice to make sure that our students gained the right help and information to be successful. To help others become ahead of the game, I have assisted students in many necessary college steps such as completing the FAFSA, finding an appropriate college, completing the application process, and applying for scholarships.

After aiding many of my school’s seniors in this process, I have started to reach out to the underclassmen. It is crucial for all students to get a head start on applications and scholarships, not just seniors, because there is a limited amount. By informing students of the importance of a head start, I am giving them the opportunity to take advantage of early applications to increase their acceptance odds. If I had this information earlier, I would have applied earlier. So, I believe that this is the best aid that a high school student could receive.
