Education is Tangible by kaylee - July 2019 Scholarship Essay

Possessing a passion for education means the world to me. After undergoing many hardships: my grand-mother passing away from brain cancer, my parents becoming re-addicted to drugs, and being sexually harassed, I have learned that education is the one thing that no one can take away from you.
My passion for education first began as an elementary school student. I was living with my grandmother and my brother. After every few days, my neglectful parents would come in and pass out on the couch after living their heroin high. Every little thing of mine that they could get their greedy, cruel hands on, they would pawn to feed their habit. After many years of enduring this abuse, my grand-mother passed away, leaving my brother and me. At this moment I realized that I needed to be better, that I needed to push through and make something of myself, to become something more than the drug fueled people I called mom and dad. I needed to excel in my schooling, go to college, and live the rest of my life like I should have.
My goal is to attend my local university to obtain a 4-year degree in Biomedical sciences and pursue my education in hopes of being a pediatric dentist someday. This aspiration means more than I can accurately express. I could acquire this tangible thing in my life that no one could take away. I could look gratefully in the mirror every day and recognize someone that overcame her overwhelming obstacles to achieve her lifelong dream, I could look in the mirror and see someone that I'm proud of.
With education, I gain extraordinary power. I develop the means to persevere through struggles that I can utilize not only to better myself, but to serve and aid others. I can give back to the community and possibly help others in similar situations. I could prevent others from suffering the same abuse that I did by telling them that if they apply themselves in school, they could become something too. So, by considering education my passion, it’s an understatement. Education isn’t my passion, It’s my life. It’s my necessary will to keep pushing on, to continue overcoming my obstacles to achieve my lifelong dreams.
