Period 1: Utopian Classroom by Kaylah - October 2014 Scholarship Essay
In almost every classroom, there is at least one child who is the class clown. Or there may be another person who is the ''rebel'', none the less who or what they are, they tend to have an effect on the other children in the class. How about if it's one of those rare days where the air conditioning goes out, and the children are left to sit in the thick, hot, muggy air while trying to learn the quadratic equation. No one would be able to fully concentrate on what was going on in the classroom, and it just becomes another distraction that is pulling away from what is being taught.
In an ideal situation, every classroom would be air conditioned, silence would be enforced when neccessary, and the content of the day would be taught in such a way that everyone in the room would be able to understand it. Also, the those who are teaching would know that not every student is able to process things as fast as others, and would offer to stay after school to help tutor the students who have fallen behind. The teachers would also realize that not all questions are stupid questions, as the saying goes. From personal experience, most students are afraid to ask the teacher their questions in front of the class because of the fear of looking ''dumb'' in front of their peers. Teachers have a large role in helping the students believe that the classroom is a safe place.
