My Dual Enrollment Experiences by Kaylah - December 2016 Scholarship Essay
In middle school I applied for the Scientific Tools and Techniques (STT) program at the Fernbank Science Center. That was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Getting accepted meant that I got to spend the second semester of my freshman year taking all of my science classes at Fernbank. I spent the mornings at Fernbank and the afternoons at Chamblee High School. Each class at Fernbank lasted a few days. In that time we learned the basics of that specific science. I got to take a variety of classes ranging from astronomy to microbiology.
At the end of the semester I finished at the top of my class. The materials I learned at Fernbank gave me a significant advantage because I had already learned the basics of the science classes that I took in later years at my high school. This allowed me to finish taking all of my science credits early.
Besides the incredible opportunity for such an interactive science experience at Fernbank, I also enjoyed dual enrollment. This experience in my freshman year gave me the confidence to apply to dual enroll at Georgia State University Perimeter College during my senior year. I was admitted and am now taking a class at the college. This is allowing me to become familiar with a college setting before I graduate from high school. While demanding, especially as I apply for college, I’m still managing to maintain having the highest grades in my Economics and British Literature classes as well as finishing with an A in my college class.
