My Nursing Educators' Perspective & Honesty by Kayla - November 2020 Scholarship Essay
Upon going through nursing school I learned, learned some more, and continued to learn every single day. All of this knowledge was of course necessary to learn, however, was sometimes an overload to my brain to learn so much at once. While I am incredibly grateful for that opportunity to have gained so much knowledge of how to be a nurse, the aspect of my education that is so memorable to me was every single nursing instructors blatant honesty while teaching me utilizing their personal experience.
Typically the nursing instructors had already put in there time at the bedside, gaining a life time of experience of what it actually means to be a nurse. To be a nurse knowing the in's and out's of a disease, how to treat a patient with that disease, how to prioritize your care for a patient, and all of the information included in the thousands of pages a nursing student will read are undeniably necessary and important; yet, among all of this information it is truly the perspective of the nursing instructor that pulls it all together. Whether it is the most heart wrenching experience of their career that they can barely share with us without starting to cry or the most insanely ridiculous experience they had as a new nurse that had them laughing to the point of tears; these moments they shared with me are the one's that are forever engrained in my mind.
As a nurse now, I sometimes look back on these memories at random times while working. For example, when I find myself in a similar situation as they were in and appreciate remembering the story they shared which allowed me to feel a little less alone throughout the experience. Other times, I look back on these memories while reminiscing with my fellow co-workers. Now, as I am typing this entry; I truly realize how thankful I actually am to have met these amazing nurses, who served our community for years and now continue serving their community by being such a positive influence to all the nurses they educate and prepare for a career that is truly like no other.
