My Gap Year Mission by Kayla - August 2019 Scholarship Essay
If I were to take a gap year I would use it as an opportunity to do things that I may only be able to do at this time in my life, before I am married or have kids or a career. One thing in particular that I would do to make the most of a gap year is to go on a mission trip. There are a lot of specific programs created just for college students taking a gap year in which they are able to travel across the world to help those in need. I have been on a mission trip before to Kingston, Jamaica and although it was only for a week I think it was life changing. Seeing how people in other parts of the world live really puts things in perspective and makes you become aware of how many things you take for granted. Not only that, but it is an amazing opportunity to help those who are less fortunate, even in seemingly small ways such as playing with some kids or painting classroom furniture. Dedicating a whole year to this kind of work would be what I truly believe would be making the most of a gap year. Being able to experience different cultures and people and be a light in so much darkness is a once in a lifetime opportunity and has the potential to change so many lives including my own.
When I had the opportunity to go to Jamaica last summer I was able to experience what it truly means to give back. I can't even describe the feeling of having dozens of kids who live in shacks made of pieces of metal and trash look up at you and smile and laugh. Seeing people who have so little be so undeniably full of joy really changes the way that you view life. I was able to bring not only tangible resources to the people living in circumstances I cannot even imagine, but words of encouragement and a smile.
Taking a gap year and using it to focus solely on mission work would be how I would make the most of a gap year. I would travel the world and meet so many new people and help all that I can. I would get to experience so many different ways of life and gain an even deeper perspective of the world and life itself. I would use my time away from school to make the world a better place and change people's lives.
