College Academic Challenges by Kayla - April 2019 Scholarship Essay
The transition from high school to college was a bit rough in the beginning. After graduating from high school and having a baby I knew my education didn't stop there. I applied and got accepted into Harrisburg Area Community College the semester following graduation, and I started taking my general education classes. When the semester began I was all over the place asking questions trying to adjust to the big change and trying to juggle school, work, and the duties of being a mother. It was tough, but it wasn't until a terrible incident occurred that taught me no matter the circumstance I could withstand the storm.
At the beginning of the semester, I learned how intense college could be, so I had to stay organized. Every day, I attended school, but it wasn't until my car was broken into that made me reconsider my decision. I felt like it was the end of the world because in my car was my book bag and it was gone. My book bag had my assignments that were due that same morning and my required books. As this moment, I felt like giving up because without those books I couldn't learn and succeed. Those books were considered my bible I read, studied and learned out of them. I cried on my way to school as I felt like a failure knowing I had to give my professors an excuse they probably would never believe. I told my professors my window was broken, and my book bag was stolen.
Therefore, the professors were understanding and gave me extra days to complete the work and turn it in. Hence, this made outraged as I already completed these assignments and had to redo them. So on my way home, I was emotional, and I started to cry because there was nothing I could do about the situation. I went straight home cried for a little then I realized crying wasn't going to get me anywhere, so I started working on my assignments. As I sat on the couch working on my assignment the doorbell rings and the only thing that comes to my mind is more bad news. Nevertheless, it was my neighbor with a pile of books asking me if they belonged to me. I was so surprised and happy I cried and thanked her for findings and returning my books. She mentioned they were found in the alleyway scattered about. She figured they were mind as she noticed my broken window and shattered glass out in front of my house.
To conclude, I've learned to never give up when times are rough there is always light at the end of the tunnel. I never thought my professors would be understanding or provide me with the help I needed to continue to succeed. It was then I knew there was nothing that could stop me from reaching and achieving the goals I set for myself. I realize there are no limits and everything is achievable through faith and hard work. I can work, go to school and handle the motherly duties set forward.
