Service by Kayla - January 2018 Scholarship Essay
Community service has always been significant in my life because when I was younger, my mom used to volunteer throughout my elementary school years. When we had sales during the school year, she made sure no one was left out of the fun and always gave a helping hand. At that point, I decided that I wanted to give a helping hand and joined a junior sorority because they give back to the community. During these service projects, I would enjoy seeing the smile on a person's face when you give them food, clothes toiletries and even acknowledgment in the community.
My junior sorority has been the most important with building a sisterhood, having a long-lasting friendships and working as a team. While being in a sisterhood is motivating, our common goal to help others has strengthened my drive to help others. I am applying to the Varsity Tutors Scholarship because of the opportunity of service I could do in college while also balancing my academics. I am not a quiet person when it comes to helping out. I am the person to take action and make change not just because it gives me community service hours but that I am a leader and leadership can create a better work world and a better school environment. One of my favorite community service activities was last year, when I was a junior, we went to a local elementary school and we helped as teacher aids, cleaned up the library, and explained to the children about our lives in high school. Through their questions, I realized just being a communicator is a service and sharing our time with them as they smile.
One aspect of my personality is that I think giving to others is the only way to strengthen our future in helping others to help themselves. I am a true believer that if you can help someone, the world will become a better place. When doing service projects throughout the year, I like to help out as a peacemaker, advocate for justice and a leader that bonds with people and to have a really close relationship with people in need. While I can't give millions of dollars to very much needed causes, my support, help and commitment to service will and always be the top priority for me. When I become a college student, I know I would be able to find and continue my community service projects, with help from other students and, if needed, help from the school.
With what I’ve learned so far, I think with your support and my drive for service, I can now start helping an entirely new community. We could make a very big change in the world just by supporting causes that need help from food drives to walking to raise awareness because small or big, everyone cause matters and will get help. I know that one person can make a change and I want to be that one that does it.
