Studying Abroad Provides Lesson Both In and Out of the Classroom by Kayla - March 2016 Scholarship Essay
Studying abroad provides students with lifelong skills they would be unable to obtain without this requirement being put in place. While in another country, students will gain cultural awareness and appreciation that is impossible to receive otherwise. Being surrounded by foreign people and places will allow students to gain more knowledge about the world as well as about themselves as an individual. The cultural awareness will give students real world practice in a more challenging environment furthering their knowledge. Requiring students to study abroad would also let individuals practice their major in new ways. They are guaranteed to gain new techniques and learn new lessons both in and out of the classroom.
While students are in another country they are required to take on a new level of independence. Without knowing the language or common practices they have no choice but to adapt to their surroundings. These skills are necessary for the real world. When it is time for an individual to get a job, they must adapt to the work load and condition on their own. If this student was not required to study abroad while in college, they more than likely never had to be truly independent. This could lead to problems in their job as well as owning a house or future endeavors. Requiring students to study abroad will not only provide students with lifelong memories it will also teach them lifelong lessons.
