Helping My School Through Running by Kayden - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
I run varsity track and cross country for my school and try to keep a positive attitude in everything we do. It doesn’t matter if we win or lose, I keep a positive attitude and try to set a good example for younger runners on the team and if I am positive, my team is more likely to be positive. As a senior, it is my job to be a good role model for the younger runners on my team. They need someone who is willing to help guide them through the athletic season and the school year.
When we win a meet we celebrate as a team and try to spread the excitement to the rest of the school. It helps give our student body a strong sense of school pride and paints a picture of camaraderie and teamwork that they can apply in their daily life. By doing this, we establish a friendship with people in our classes and around school. When they hear that we have an upcoming meet they wish us luck or tell us to do our best. By celebrating our victories with our school we open doors for others to be positive and kind.
When we lose a meet it is easy to get mad or annoyed with each other. I try to keep a positive attitude about our losses because it affects my team’s attitude and how they will tell others about the meet. If I choose to have a negative outlook, my team is more likely to have that same outlook. When they tell their friends and classmates about the meet their recount will be negative and could influence that person’s attitude.
High school is tough on everyone and everyone has bad days. However, if I can change even one person’s perspective of a day then I feel as if I have positively impacted my student body. Attitude and outlook are ripple effects because people are more likely to agree with others. By positively influencing one person I am able to affect the entire student body because of this. A person’s total high school experience is the sum of their days in high school. If the good days outweigh the bad ones, they are more likely to have a good high school experience. I try to make as many people have good days as possible so our student body is happy with their high school experience when they graduate.
