A Righteous Remnant by Katrina - November 2019 Scholarship Essay
In the words of Michelle Obama, one of the most influential and progressive first ladies of the United States, “No matter what you aspire to, you’ve got to love what you do in order to be successful at it.” When it comes to being an inspiring role model, she expresses what I believe to be the most important aspect of being a leader: passion. I believe every single position of leadership I have held or still hold to this day has taught me that passion is the root of all progress. Furthermore, through this maintained aura of morality and passion, I have positively influenced my student body by leaving my loving legacy. I believe I have taught those in my school that the most important thing in life is to bring joy to others which will, in turn, bring light to your own life.
In my school, I am well-known as a sort of jack of all trades. I am involved in most activities, from track and field all the way to jazz band; moreover, I hold positions of leadership in many of these roles. Through these roles of power, I have successfully been able to set an example for my classmates as an encourager of ethics and principles.
I strongly believe that a leader leads not in their verbal interactions, but in their actions, especially when they do not realize they are being watched. Whether this be something as trivial as picking up a stray piece of garbage, littering the ground mere inches from a garbage can, or something as influential as staying behind to run with a slower peer on the track team, I have done it all. In these times, I have shown my compassion and zeal for life, which, in turn, has shown a model to my peers of the joys that come from helping others in life.
I believe in my school, I have influenced others to live a moral life because it will reap only benefits for others but more importantly yourself. I have shown, through my drive to be a virtuous role model, that progress in life comes from yourself: if you can safely say you influenced a life everyday, you are doing your ethical job. I do not leave my school without giving at least three people a compliment. It is the small actions such as these that, I believe, speak volumes about my influence and genuine legacy of which I am leaving my peers.
