My Major by Katlin - May 2023 Scholarship Essay

I plan on majoring in Exercise Physiology. This branch interests me because I grew up playing sports and know the importance of physical therapy. Through this experience I have decided that I want to become a physical therapist. When I was in 10th grade I broke my ankle twice and had to visit a physical therapist to get better. His knowledge and dedication piqued my interest and has been my desire ever since.
During my highschool career I have participated on the volleyball, track, and football teams. This has led me to obtaining a relationship with our school's Athletic Trainer, Rob. I have seen internships shadow him while he works and their excitement has sparked something within me. Rob has shown me how to tape an ankle and deal with concussion symptoms. Through this my interest in sports medicine has only grown.
Another reason as to why I want to major in Exercise Physiology is because I have seen incidences where people feel uncomfortable or violated by their physical therapists and I want to change that. There was a gymnast therapist named Larry Nassar who was convicted of violating young athletes who came to him. This brings up emotions in me that make me want to be a physical therapist that others can trust and feel comfortable around.
In conclusion, I plan to major in Exercise Physiology because my goal is to become a Physical Therapist, I have found interest in that area, and I want to be someone that people feel comfortable going to for physical assistance.
