My Passions in Life by Katie - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

My New Year’s resolution as a student in 2016 is to really observe and take in all of the opportunities that are available to me through the next year. As my senior year closes to an end in June, I am starting to lose the sense of time and how precious it really is. Watching my friends and family grow has been such a wonderful blessing, but it also goes by so very quickly. I plan to take on every tutoring opportunity, to help others continue to grow and learn, every volunteering opportunity, to give back to others, and to really buckle down with the rapid approach of college.
This school year, I was chosen to tutor a freshman, who continuously blows my mind with his adoration for life and the natural beauty within all of us. I tutor him in Algebra 1, and though it is a relatively simple concept, he still struggles. I am able to break down problems and ideas for him to comprehend, which in turn help me, strangely enough. I constantly find myself using tips and tricks that I used for my tutee, and it helps me with things in my other, more complicated classes. Through my efforts to help a freshman in need, I indirectly helped myself understand my academic concepts, giving me yet one more reason to help others.
As a member of NHS, I volunteer for “opps” that are to volunteer to the community around us. Whenever possible, I like to give back to those who are giving to the school that I attend, because it gives them happiness in their life. Being able to contribute even just a weak smile is enough for me to be happy in volunteering with more and more opportunities. I am able to connect my academic studies to the real world this way, as well. Not only am I “Filling the Bus”, but I am also giving strength back to men, women, and children who are ill and in need of food, allowing me to relate my Human Anatomy and Physiology class, to these unfortunate people who need the replenished nutrients.
As my graduation date creeps closer and closer, I realize that it’s time to take a moment and think of how I can make it through college. My immediate thoughts were: What degree I want to apply for, what school do I want to go to, what do I major in? Etc. Through the help of my schools opportunities, I was able to decide what I wanted to do, and how I could do it. 2016, though it’s only been less than a month, has given me perspective that I am becoming my own person who has responsibilities, and allowed me to create a mindset of pure commitment and diligence and I was able to decide how to blend all of my passions into a single career. Today, I am dedicated to continuing a passion to help the people through my adventure of nursing and will find my own ways to decipher the body.
