Biology, and Spanish, and Plastic Surgery, oh my! by Katie - February 2019 Scholarship Essay
My dream job is to work in a clinic where I can perform both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. I would love to be able to help babies born with a cleft lift or palate, burn victims, survivors of domestic abuse, soldiers who have been injured in the line of duty, a breast cancer survivor in need of breast reconstruction, or a person who has had a miraculous weight loss journey but must be aided with excess skin removal. On the other side of things, I would love to be there to sculpt a nose, breasts, stomach, or back. No matter the type of surgery, I aspire to help people who are not comfortable in their own skin feel beautiful once again.
Currently, I am planning on double majoring in Biology and Spanish, which will help me to reach a larger number of patients. Plastic surgery is extremely interesting to me because of the many different specialty areas. A plastic surgeon can help their patient feel beautiful and confident again. Whether it is repairing an injury or recontouring a patient’s features, the goal is to deliver high quality, professional medical care and to help the patient feel happy and comfortable with the results.
For the past four years, I have been working hard to become fluent in Spanish. In our wonderfully diverse country, the number of non-native English speakers is increasing, and Spanish is at the top of that list. Being able to communicate with others who do not speak my native English is exhilarating, especially when it comes to helping out someone in need. As I become more fluent, I also become more open and compassionate as a human being: a trait that everyone can strive for in life.
