Be Yourself! by Katie - July 2016 Scholarship Essay
"No matter what you say or do, make sure it makes YOU happy!" These are a few of the most inspiring, meaningful words that I have ever heard. After spending the majority of my life trying to please others and creating a deep rut for myself to get out of, I realized that I needed help. My teacher also saw that, and helped me out. "You have spent years trying to make others happy, and stretching your time so thin. You need to take time to breath and relax. You are way too young to be living that kind of a lifestyle. No matter what you say or do, make sure it makes YOU happy!" she explained as I trudged into her warm, comforting classroom. After talking about the challenges that I have faced, all the obstacles that I will encounter, and talking about all the possible paths this could lead me down in life, we came to the conclusion that I was ready to make a change.
Between adding "me time" volunteering more in the community, spending time with my family and friends, and eliminating unhealthy relationships, I found a balance that works for me. I realized I have tons of fun hobbies that I have never had time for, stronger relationships, and a healthier lifestyle in all. Through this experience, I learned that pleasing people can also please me, such as volunteering. When I am volunteering, I have this inner happiness that is not even explainable. It lights a fire inside of me that shines for others, and myself, to enjoy!
Without that teacher that opened my eyes to a change, I would not be the person I am today at all. I would not spend my free time dancing around in the kitchen while making a sweet treat, complete over 100 volunteer hours per year, or have strong relationships with my peers. I am done hiding behind a certain style to fit in, spending my time doing things I don't enjoy, and digging myself into a deeper rut of negativity and despair, and it's because I live in the present and do and say what will make ME happy!
