Selflessness and Bravery by Kathryn - December 2018 Scholarship Essay

If I was on the committee that awards the Nobel Prize, my recipient would need to be selfless and brave. The person I chose would have to display not just one act of selflessness, but many grand acts of putting others before themselves. A selfless person always thinks about others’ wants and needs before their own. Charity work, volunteering, and donating are three things that my candidate would have to not only do often, but truly enjoy and love doing for other people. They would have to live their life with one goal: to serve others.

The second quality my recipient would need to have is bravery. To me, bravery does not just mean doing a scary thing in a striking situation. Bravery means not being afraid to do the right thing at a time when no one else is. It is not being afraid to fail when most people would. To be considered a brave person, you must be a leader. You must have the courage to set the example that others would be proud to follow. Even though my recipient would be brave, they would not be cocky or egotistical. One can be confident in their own abilities without seeming to make others feel inferior. My Nobel Prize winner would be a selfless and brave, well-rounded individual.
