You Are Not Alone by Kathryn - June 2014 Scholarship Essay

I love to read. Romance, drama, and mystery books are some of my favorites; but biographies and books based on a true story are my favorite to read. If I were to write a book, I would write it about the life of my friend Nicole. At 20 years old, she has been through more trauma than anyone I know and can bless many with her story.

Nicole’s mother is a drug addict. She put her addiction before her children, and caused Nicole and her older brother and sister to go into foster care. They received mental and physical abuse while in foster care, something that no child deserves. After spending a couple years in that environment, their grandmother adopted Nicole and her siblings. Even though Nicole was given a stable and loving home life, she was getting in trouble in school and always getting into trouble. Two years ago, she was caught up in an unfortunate event where she ended up in jail and recently transported to prison. Nicole has seen things that no one should have to see and she has learned a lot from it.

When someone picks up a book, they expect to live through the characters and feel a part of the action. A book based on real life experiences is one of the best ways to accomplish that feeling. People can see themselves in those types of books. There is something about relating to an event in a book that opens your eyes and makes you go “Wow! I’ve been through that” or “I have felt the same way”. I want other people to have those feeling when they read my book about Nicole. I want people to know that they are not alone and that they too can make it through the trials of life because someone always has it worse than you do.
