What Is Technology Education and How It impacts My Education by Kathryn - September 2017 Scholarship Essay

In the few years I have been in high school, I had countless electives. I want to think that all my classes are linked to my education, even my electives. However, there are some electives that prepare a student for a higher education. One of these electives is technology education, and it influenced my knowledge by helping me develop problem-solving skills and introduced me to the world of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and robotics.

Tech Ed(technology education) is an elective class in which students learn the concepts of STEM. When I was in the class, I learned how math and science apply to building objects that people take for granted, such as bridges and smart phones. For example, the instructor would teach students how bridges are constructed and which structure is the strongest. Then, though a trial and error effort, the class created their own bridge and tested which bridge was the best one due to it strength against the weight. Also, the teacher explained to the class about facts that relate to the subject. For instance, if the instructor taught the students about airplanes, then he or she would bring out the flight simulator system that can be attached to a computer, and the students played on this simulator.
In numerous ways, one can develop excellent problem-solving skills. For me, my Tech Ed class increased my skills. Once, I was putting up my chickens, and when I closed the door, the hook cord that was attached broke off. Thinking clearly, I remembered there was a metal chain nearby, so I ran down to grab it and placed the chain around the door. During this time, my Tech Ed instructor had been giving the class problem-solving projects. As a result,I learned and used it for a real world situation.

Although my other classes have introduced limitless concepts and organizations, Tech Ed has opened my eyes to STEM and robotics. In the class, the instructor introduces a subject and then adds on when the students are working on their projects. For example, when my class was building bridges, Mr. Brooks, the Tech Ed teacher, would lecture about how the bridge should react to weight of the block and how much pressure one should put on the bridge. Also, the elective initiates and encourages the class to join the robotics team. The instructor would bring the robot to the class, and then he would demonstrate how to control the robot. In addition, the team usually took the robot to the school fair and showed younger children what the robot could do and influenced them to join the team in the future. As a result, I joined the robotics team last year.

I have been in many electives over the years. However, Tech Ed is a class I believe has affected my education by enhancing my problem-solving skills. Likewise, it introduced me to science, math, technology, and engineering and robotics.Technology education has improved my education, and I hope it will continue to do so.
