Language by Kathleen - November 2021 Scholarship Essay

There is no questioning which class lacks attention in the American education system; foreign language. It has given little care to introducing, let alone teaching, young children to languages other than English. Introducing the concept of different languages and cultures should be a priority at such a young age, yet it often is overlooked in curriculum standards. If we focus on foreign languages more, the next generation can be ready for a global-based future and create connections across the world and in their communities.
Language is an important concept to grasp; it's how we connect as humans. As we get older, a new language becomes harder to learn.
Through multiple studies, learning a second language is seen to be easier the younger you are. Lead with Language reports, "Children who learn another language before age five use the same part of the brain to acquire that second language that they use to learn their mother tongue," (LeadwithLanguage) meaning children will struggle less than an adult to learn a language. This is why the introduction to a foreign language is necessary for the youth. An intro to a new culture and language will also help a child's brain development, enhancing problem-solving abilities in the process.
To create a stronger connection in the world, we need to understand each other. It should be encouraged to explore and study a new language; consequently, we will create a better-connected world in the process.
