How I Would Make the Best of a Gap Year by Kathleen - August 2019 Scholarship Essay
If I were to take a gap year, I would want to make the absolute most of those 365 days. My biggest goal in life is to knowing I made a real difference in the world and to have impacted those I have come in contact with. To achieve this, I would use a gap year to do mission trips. As a nursing major, I would like to pursue a career with the Peace Corps and later travel nursing. Therefore, my gap year plans align with those goals in mind.
In today’s world, mission trips are often controversial. Many companies are criticized for focusing on their media influence rather than their cause. However, with in depth research there are multiple organizations that educate their volunteers about saviorism and are able to directly assist communities in need. Jobs that I could do without a degree include assembling buildings such as schools, homes, and sanctuaries, provide care and play for young children, and even something as simple as holding orphaned infants as it has such an important effect on their psychological development. Not only would I be helping communities, but I would also get the opportunity to be exposed to many different cultures and gain a deeper understanding of myself.
In conclusion, given the chance to have a gap year, I would chase my dream. As cliche as it is, helping whole communities and getting to travel while doing so, is my absolute goal. Through volunteering in other countries, I would fulfill my desire to inspire, help, and make an impact.
