'Introduction to College Application and Entrance' by Katherine - February 2022 Scholarship Essay
All across the United States, there are thousands of available elective classes ranging from automotive technology to even jewelry making. Although students can feel like there are so many enticing options, there is still a critical piece missing from all of our educations. For too long the college industry has remained a confusing puzzle, only pieced together through intense research-on your own time- or with the aid of an expensive counselor. Students are not well prepared to even think about the path many of them are going to be expected to take. It would be extremely beneficial to introduce The 'Introduction to College Application and Entrance', an elective class that provides not only the information, but also the materials for success with the college search and application process.
As a costly process to begin with, students in underfunded districts will face even more roadblocks when it comes to understanding how college works. Without any clearly laid out information, or resources to see what schools are looking for, it can be very difficult for those who see college as their escape from poverty to even get close to that life betterment. As it stands, the current college application system is inherently classist. While wealthier kids will have access to college counselors and involved guidance departments at their schools, underfunded districts will struggle to find support and information. This is why it is so imperative for such a class to be implemented. If we give people the opportunity to learn about college for free, many more will take the initiative, potentially heightening enrollment rates. A more educated society is a more productive one, and a wealthier one.
If more people learn about what college could look like for them and what options they truly have, many who previously believed they were not the right fit for such an institution will be able to envision more for themselves. Even the children in wealthier districts who may have been unable to access clear information could benefit from the structure and curriculum-based learning of an entire class on what their future may look like. To have such information at your disposal is very valuable, especially when the industry seeks to make the process as confusing as possible to help generate revenue.
Ultimately, this course would serve simply as an educational environment. It should not be taken as a difficult and intense course, but rather one to help further true understanding of the world we live in.Although many seminars and YouTube tutorials are available, none of those can replace the focus and intensity that comes with an actual class. Students not only remain more positively engaged, but they can receive real feedback on things like their essay, their application, and the schools they wish to apply to. Each teacher will be focused on their respective group of kids allowing them to get to know each child on a more personal level. As Americans who claim to value education, and want to build a better Society, it is time to lay the process bare. Accessibility is the future.
