Expressing Creativity Through Writing by Katherine - September 2019 Scholarship Essay
If I had the opportunity to create a high school extracurricular activity, I would form a creative writing club. For many high school students, writing is very difficult and something very few people look forward to. In many classes, students are expected to fit a very strict criteria for their writing, leaving them very little opportunity to express themselves or write about something that interests them. This makes writing extremely tedious and leaves many students frustrated with the idea that they're not a good writer. This mindset turns many people away from writing altogether, and they may never get the opportunity to explore something they could be passionate about.
This problem is what inspires me to make a creative writing club. This extracurricular would allow students to explore the fun side of writing (unless you enjoy research or analysis papers), and inspire a changing attitude of what writing can be as well as it's individuality. People do their best work when they have freedom, creativity, and excitement for what they're doing, and the same concept applies for writing. Writing can also be a creative outlet, much like music, art, dance, etc. Learning how to be a good writer is extremely important for the future, not only in college and work, but for the years beyond in everyday life. Having a good foundation and relationship for writing is something many people lack, and that's something I would want to change starting in high school. For me, writing has always been something that I've enjoyed and something that has come relatively easily to me. I want more people to experience that, and this extracurricular is the perfect method to reach other students in a way that's not only stress-free, but also fun. A creative writing club would be something not only extremely beneficial to students, but also something more artistic that they would enjoy. Now that is what we call a win-win situation.
