Let Your Light Shine by Katherine - July 2018 Scholarship Essay
Many times, politicians from every level focus on 'fixing' what they perceive as wrong. Even in high school, student council candidates often talk about all the things they'll change to make the school better. However, I'd take a different approach if I were running for student body president, one that amplifies the good that already exists.
Every day in my school, I witness random acts of kindness, true connections being made between friends, and teachers that regularly go above and beyond. My candidacy and, if elected, term as president would seek to encourage students and staff to let their light shine. I'd promote a reward system, help implement a discipline system based on restorative justice, and encourage practices that foster healing and health in mind, body, and spirit.
Sometimes, the best way to effect change is also the simplest. It's not a naive approach, but one that is backed up by research and practical experience. Kindness isn't the finish line, but it is the beginning. When you create a school culture that allows free and open exchange of ideas in an atmosphere of kindness, students and staff alike feel respected and valued. This doesn't mean everyone will always agree, or that disagreements won't happen. It does set a standard for behavior, though. In today's climate, the term "safe space" is used disparagingly. I suggest taking back the term and using it as it was intended - as a way to encourage respect and civility when presented with different viewpoints.
I believe in the intrinsic good in people of all ages. In a world that is becoming increasingly negative, the easiest way to combat darkness might just be to let in the sun.
