Innovaton by Katherine - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

I will describe my desire to attend college to be innovative. I want to am aiming to work as a biomedical engineer. The University of Alaska, Anchorage (UAA) does not have a biomedical engineering program so at the moment, I am enrolled in mechanical engineering. I have to work my way around the absence of the program. Though the basis of biomedical engineering is mechanical engineering, I still will have to make up for the lack of knowledge in the medical side of the degree.

My goal is to finish my bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at UAA. Then I will attend graduates school to build off of my degree and integrate it into a biomedical engineering degree. I recognize that this maneuver will take a lot of hard work and dedication, but I am up for the challenge. I am very excited to learn more about this subject and to accomplish my goals in this very passionate subject of mine.

My desire to study biomedical engineering is based on a very personal event in my life. In January of 2017, I found out that I tore my ACL and proceeded to have knee surgery. I am on the track team for UAA and I have to wear a giant knee brace on my hurt leg which weighs about 3 pounds and takes up a lot of space. The brace starts at the bottom of my shin and goes all the way up to my mid-thigh. There is no other brace that I can have to exercise in, so this is my motivation in becoming a biomedical engineer. I want to find a way for braces to be much smaller and lighter in order to enhance the performance of the athlete. In my college career, I need to incorporate a copious amount of innovation to my degree.
