All College Students Should be Required to Study Abroad by Katherine - March 2016 Scholarship Essay

Expanding horizons and becoming culturally diverse is something that will benefit a person for the rest of their life. Many colleges offer students the chance to study abroad but only a select few take advantage of it. If colleges made studying abroad a required part of their program, it will help students build connections, experience new things and develop a better sense of identity.
For many people, this could be their only chance to travel outside of the United States. The cost of studying abroad is an important factor to if a person will want to take advantage of studying abroad. If schools made this required, I think they would have to help financially, especially if it were to become a requirement of the college. However, this could also make their college seem more appealing and a better choice than others if this is something that is required.
The people who have studied abroad enjoy the freedom of being with friends and being in a new environment. For those that go, they could possibly pick up a new language, experience new cultures and foods, and make lifelong friends. Also, a student could increase their language skills if they are already familiar with the native language. Students that I know who have studied abroad greatly enjoyed their experiences and suggest to others that they should do it as well. Studying abroad allows students to create memories that will last a lifetime and learn things that one can’t always learn in a classroom.
