Commitment by Katharine - January 2018 Scholarship Essay

Commitment is what gets you up in the morning, it is what keeps relationships together, it is what drives you to push outside of your boundaries and admit failure.
Until my sophomore year of high school, I had not committed to a school for more than two years. I found myself bouncing around from elementary schools, to middle schools and even high schools until I found where I belonged. In my sophomore year my family and I found “Saint Marys” an all-girls boarding school in North Carolina. Going to a school that was not co-ed, as well as living on a campus was a lot for me to adjust to. My class size averaged around 12 students and the academic rigor was the biggest challenged I had ever faced in my academic career.
It would have been easiest for me to tell my parents this school was going to fall into my “no more than 2 years” statistic, but the community that surrounded me was not going to let me walk away easily. My advisor recommended that I use my teacher’s office hours to work through the rigor of my class work and she promised me that everyone on our campus was there to support and guide me through the rest of my high school career. I soon realized this school was committed to me and I was going to work my hardest to prove to myself I was capable of thriving and staying devoted to my academics.
I now plan to take this word of “commitment” onto the campus of Furman University, where I will be attending this fall. I chose this word to express why I want to attend college because I know that commitment will bring me success. With commitment to college, goals are created and when having goals, I will strive to obtain more than what is convenient. I have already created a strong commitment when I arrive to my college campus, and with this mindset of trying my hardest; failure will not have a negative impact on me. In fact, it will motivate me to try harder and learn from the mistakes I make. I believe that committing is an easy word to choose for this prompt, but with every success a person has earned in their life, it would not have been possible without the concept of committing to the end goal of success and further challenging oneself to succeeded further.
