Small Actions, Big Impact by Katelyn - January 2024 Scholarship Essay

People from all over the world have their own ways of giving to others, from tackling the world's biggest challenge to being good friends. When I first entered the gym for my first ever volleyball tryout back in 7th grade, all eyes were on me. Was it because I was wearing neon-colored knee-high socks? Or was it because I had my long hair down and had no intention of tying it up for tryouts? I've always been a quiet kid and had a fear of what others thought about me. I went to the first tryout pretty scared; I didn’t know how much competition there was going to be, and I knew no one there. There was a diversity of kids who were experienced and all excited to start playing volleyball. Me on the other hand, I had no clue what I was doing, and I knew I was the outsider of the group. So many thoughts were running through my head. I was always the last one chosen for teams due to my skill and the fact that I never said a word to anyone. I could tell that all the other girls thought I was weird, all except one.
This girl came up to me first and could tell that I was nervous. She would partner up with me and make me feel accepted and that I belong. She helped me find the love for volleyball and little does she know that her walking up towards a shy, introverted girl, created the person I am today. 10 years later, me and this girl have been friends ever since and play volleyball together for middle school, high school and club. I currently play volleyball at Southern Nazarene University, a DII college and have no regrets about continuing volleyball. I’ve grown to love volleyball because it has taught me to better my communication skills, become a leader and has given me friendships I wouldn't trade for anything.
I coach volleyball for younger kids and watching them play reminds me of my start. Some will grow to love the sport while others may not enjoy it as much, but I hope to make an impact on them by creating a positive environment. By creating a positive and supportive environment, it's not only teaching volleyball skills but also imparting valuable life lessons that will stay with these kids as they grow. All it takes is one person's efforts to have a lasting impact on their overall development and love for the sport.
