Inspiring Humanity by Katelyn - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
Teaching, I can only imagine, can get redundant. To teach a core class like Math or English would be to stick oneself in a bubble, a cycle of showing students the same black and white information day in and day out. Therefore, if I were a college professor, I’d definitely choose to teach social sciences and philosophy. While any subject must get bland at some point, people and their beliefs are constantly unpredictable. As I’ve grown to become my own person, I’ve come to a realization: we don’t always stop and reevaluate how our actions can affect each other. We give advice based on what we would do, ourselves. We hold steadily to our own beliefs and belittle those who don’t share our perceptions on the world.
If I were to ever become a college professor, I would make it my mission to help others open their eyes to new ideas and analyze why people do what they do before choosing to judge based on actions alone. In addition, philosophy absolutely fascinates me in the sense that it’s very closely related to social ideas. While there are hundreds of different ways people answer that age old question of “Why are we here?” they almost all hold the same values. I would love the opportunity to teach these connections to fellow humans, to help prove to the world that for whatever reason we are here, we are all here together, and there are reasons for people’s choices, deep-rooted and psychological. These are subjects that can’t get old, because they’re always changing on their own. Nobody has control over them, even the most intelligent of professionals can only stand back and observe as humanity runs amok. I am incredibly passionate about the idea of connection, and as a college professor I would use it to bring inspiration to those who study society and its beliefs.
