Reversing the Roles by Katelyn - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If the roles were reversed, I would teach English. I would be an English teacher because it is really important to know how to write. I feel that if you teach students how to speak and write properly, you are enhancing communication skills that can be useful in school, work, and relationships.

I have always made good grades in English. In junior high I had an excellent English teacher that taught me so much. Even though she was tough, she was one of my favorite teachers. Because of what I learned in her class, my high school English classes have not been too hard. If I taught English, I would want to educate kids the same way my junior high teacher educated me. Students can use what they learn in English class to write papers and apply for college scholarships. English skills are also useful when applying for a job.

The job market is very competitive. When applying for a job it is important to have good verbal and written skills. Those skills can be used when writing a résumé. You have to make yourself stand out from other applicants. Using proper English skills can also help you sound professional during an interview. When you are employed, you will continue to use what you have learned from your English classes. You will use those skills when communicating with co-workers and clients. The English lessons learned will also be used in everyday life.

People communicate with each other every day. They may speak to someone in person or call them on the phone. They may write them a letter, send an email, or send a text message. Social media has become a popular way to communicate with others. Good communication skills can help us to have better personal relationships.

We may not realize it now, but the English skills we are learning in school will prepare us for college and employment. Our verbal and written skills will help us with our relationships with others. The communication skills learned from our English classes will have a big impact on our daily lives, and that is why if the roles were reversed, I would teach English.
